The Text They Quote Is Wrong: Sermon Series 107

What if a verse you have quoted your whole life means something entirely different from what you were taught? That is exactly the ground we walk on when we open Proverbs 23:1-8. Most of us have heard the phrase 'as a man thinketh, so is he' used to promote positive thinking, personal success, and the power of the mind. But when we slow down and read the whole passage, we discover that this verse is not about the power of thought at all. It is set in the middle of a dinner party, and the man thinking is actually a cheap host who is calculating the cost of every bite his guest takes. The Hebrew word underneath 'thinketh' is sha'ar, a rare word that appears only once in the entire Hebrew Bible, and its root means to split, divide, or calculate, something closer to market pricing than deep reflection. When we understand that, the verse stops being a motivational slogan and starts being a warning about who is really at the table with us and what they are truly after. This is an invitation for us to read more carefully, ask harder questions, and never let a half-sentence stand in for the whole truth.
