Death and Life in the Power of the Tongue
This powerful teaching takes us to the plains of Moab, where Moses stands before the second generation of Israelites, delivering his final words before they enter the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy 30, we encounter a profound covenant moment in which Moses calls heaven and earth to witness, presenting the people with a choice between life and death, blessing and cursing. What makes this message revolutionary is the connection between this ancient covenant choice and the daily power we wield through our words. The teaching reveals that the same Hebrew words Moses used - Mavet (death) and Chaim (life) - appear again in Proverbs 18:21, showing us that the Sinai covenant is not a historical relic but a living reality in our mouths today. Every conversation becomes a Plains of Moab moment where we choose life or death. The agricultural imagery reminds us that we will eat the fruit of our words, experiencing multiple harvests from what we speak. This is not metaphorical - our innermost being is saturated by what comes out of our mouths. Jesus modeled this perfectly when He declared that His words are spirit and life. We are challenged to examine whether the words we speak to our spouses, children, coworkers, and congregations bring life or death, understanding that our speech has creative power that mirrors God's image in us.
