The Weight of the Look
What does it truly mean to commit adultery in the heart? In this deep dive into Matthew 5:27-30, we are challenged to move beyond surface-level readings of one of Scripture's most misunderstood passages. The teaching anchors us in a vital truth established just a few verses earlier in Matthew 5:17, where Yeshua declares he did not come to destroy the Torah but to fulfill it. Everything that follows must be read through that lens. Rather than introducing a new or harsher standard, Yeshua is actually reconnecting the seventh and tenth commandments, showing us that the prohibition against adultery and the prohibition against coveting your neighbor's wife were always two sides of the same coin. The Greek word epithumeo, translated as "lust," is not inherently sinful. What makes it sin is the object and the claim, wanting what is not yours to want. This is a liberating and clarifying distinction that frees us from the burden of false guilt while calling us to genuine accountability. We are invited to understand Scripture not just as a set of rules but as a living, layered conversation between God and his people, one that rewards careful study and honest engagement.
