Let Your Yes Be Yes: Matthew 5:33-37
What does it really mean to keep our word? In this study of Matthew 5:33-37, we are taken deep into one of the most searching teachings Yahushua Jesus ever delivered. He takes a familiar law about oaths and promises and turns it inside out, revealing that the real issue was never about the right words to swear by. It was always about the condition of our hearts. We explore how people across generations have reached for phrases like 'I swear to God,' 'on everything I love,' and 'cross my heart' precisely because a plain yes or no did not feel strong enough on its own. And that is exactly the point. When our word requires reinforcement, it is already telling us something about our integrity. The spiritual lesson here is both simple and staggering: our honesty should be so consistent, so trustworthy, and so deeply rooted in who we are that no oath is ever needed. Yahushua does not lower the standard of the law. He deepens it, calling us to a level of truthfulness that makes swearing unnecessary altogether. This is an invitation to examine the quality of our yes and the courage of our no, and to ask honestly whether the people around us can take our word at face value.
